I gravitated towards cars from an early age, but when my Dad bought me a hot rod magazine at age 11 I realized I’d been born in the wrong country, at the wrong time. There weren’t too many hot rods around in England in the ’70s! I went on to work in auto collision repair, eventually owning a bodyshop, built my first award-winning hot rod – a Flathead-powered Model A roadster – in the late ’80s, before switching careers and becoming editor of Custom Car magazine.

Twelve years ago I made the jump across the pond, worked in a rodshop initially, then became Tech Editor, and later, Editor, at Rod & Custom magazine for almost a decade. With the magazine’s closure, I moved to Street Rodder and Classic Trucks magazines, then three years ago made the move back to self-employment, opening my own fabrication shop, Kev’s Rod & Custom, in La Habra, California.

Career highlights include organizing static and live hot rod and dragster displays at Goodwood Festival Of Speed, driving the hillclimb at that event, becoming friends with hot rod industry’ heroes,’ building and racing my land speed car at Bonneville, but most of all, recently building a Model A pickup hot rod for, and most importantly with, my 17 year old son. Memories to cherish…
